English

At Folville Junior School, we believe that English is fundamental to every child’s and adult’s life. We are constantly surrounded by written and spoken language, and rely on reading, writing, speaking and listening in our daily routines. That is why English sits at the heart of everything we do.

We are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential as a confident communicator and an independent learner. Through high-quality teaching and a rich curriculum, pupils develop essential skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, which they apply across a wide range of subjects and real-life contexts.

Children are encouraged to express themselves creatively and imaginatively. They become enthusiastic and thoughtful readers of stories, poetry, drama, as well as non-fiction and media texts, learning to read with enjoyment and a critical eye. Alongside this, they are supported to write clearly and effectively for different purposes and audiences.

We recognise that strong English skills underpin all areas of the curriculum and are crucial to each child’s academic success and personal, social and emotional development.
