Our Vision for Mathematics
At Folville Junior School, we want every child to become a happy, confident and successful mathematician.
We want our children to see mathematics as something they can understand, enjoy and use - not a barrier to success. We want them to leave Folville equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for future learning and for everyday life.
We want our children to be:
Confident and motivated – believing in themselves as mathematicians and enjoying their learning.
Fluent – developing secure understanding of foundational concepts in number and calculation.
Curious and engaged – exploring mathematical ideas and taking ownership of their learning.
Reflective thinkers – developing the skills to reason, solve problems and explain their thinking.
Effective communicators – using mathematical language to discuss, explain and justify their ideas.
Successful – whatever success looks like for each individual child.
How We Teach Mathematics
Our mathematics curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively from Year 3 to Year 6.
We use White Rose Maths to support the planning and sequencing of our curriculum. Our approach focuses on developing deep understanding rather than simply learning procedures. Children are given opportunities to explore mathematical concepts, make connections, develop fluency, reason and apply their understanding to solve problems.
In Years 3 and 4, we also use Number Sense to strengthen children's understanding of number and calculation. This supports children to develop flexible and efficient strategies for working with numbers and builds a strong foundation for future mathematical learning.
Mathematical Talk
Talk is an important part of mathematics at Folville.
Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, listen to different approaches and use mathematical vocabulary accurately. We want children to be able to explain how they reached an answer and why their method works, rather than simply giving an answer.
Making Mathematics Accessible
We have high expectations for every child and believe that every child can make progress in mathematics.
Teachers use a range of approaches to support children to access and understand mathematical concepts, including manipulatives, representations, modelling, questioning and carefully chosen scaffolds.
Children are encouraged to develop a broad toolkit of strategies and to become increasingly independent in choosing the most effective approach for themselves.
Mathematics at Folville
Across our maths lessons, children have opportunities to:
Build fluency
Develop secure knowledge of number facts and calculation strategies.Reason
Explain their mathematical thinking and justify their ideas.Problem solve
Apply their knowledge to a range of mathematical problems and unfamiliar situations.Communicate
Use mathematical language to discuss and explain their understanding.Make connections
Link new learning to what they already know and recognise mathematics in different contexts.
Our aim is for every child to leave Folville thinking “I can do maths” and feeling ready to take their next steps with confidence.
