Foundation Subjects

At Folville Junior School, our curriculum is driven by our belief that every child deserves the best possible life opportunities. We aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities to understand and navigate the world they live in, beginning with their community and extending outwards to the wider world..

We proudly serve a multicultural community, and this diversity is central to our curriculum design. Our children’s identities, heritage and lived experiences shape what we teach, how we sequence it and why we teach it. Across all subjects, pupils explore who they are, where they live and how they belong within a diverse society.

We bring learning to life through rich experiences such as visitors, drama opportunities and local and national trips (e.g. animal encounters, Roman workshops, WWII days, visits linked to CLS and community partnerships). These experiences deepen curiosity, ensure equality of access and make learning memorable.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and broken down into clear, progressive knowledge and skills. It builds systematically over time, revisiting and strengthening prior learning to reduce cognitive load and support mastery. Vocabulary and oracy are fundamental: our pupils are taught to “talk like a… scientist/historian/geographer” through subject-specific language and structured talk opportunities, allowing them to express deep understanding.

Underpinned by our values, we ensure Folville is a place where every child has a champion. We nurture strengths, uncover potential and hold high expectations for every child so they can achieve excellence, contribute positively and thrive beyond school.
